Successful DTC Claims from 2002 to 2014

Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) receives 200,000 new Disability Tax Credit (DTC) applications each year and approximately 9,000 from taxpayers who use the service of a "promoter," a third-party consultant that charges a contingency fee, according to Senator JoAnne Buth at a hearing of the Standing Senate Committee on National Finance on April 1, 2014.

In 2005, there was a significant increase in successful claims due to major reforms of the Income Tax Act. However, CRA appears to be tightening the eligibility criteria since 2008 with the growth of a highly profitable industry charging as much as 35% of the refund in fees. Currently, there are more than 20 companies assisting taxpayers navigate the DTC application process
